Read the passage carefully.
A contented man is a happy man. A man who is always running after money and luxuries of life, cannot get real happiness. As a matter of fact, he is only losing the real happiness which he may otherwise get if he does not pursue these tensive activities.
A man who does not have much money, may be happy if he can get a little with his sincere and honest efforts. With that little which provides him enough for the necessities of life, he can lead a life of contentment, peace of mind, and joy.
A man who has a lot of money, often becomes greedy. A man who has just a few thousand, may be contented with his lot while leading a simple, care-free life. On the other hand, one who has crores or lakhs of rupees wants that his money should multiply quickly and so he is always worried and is under stress for this very reason.
It is most pitiable that a man with a lot of money and property and while himself leading a life of awful luxuries, should forget his friends and even nearest relatives. But a poor man still has the milk of human kindness in him. He is ready to extend his hospitality to his friends and relatives and even strangers who may be in dire need of it.
Contentment is a great virtue which anybody who is clear- hearted and is free from vice can easily pursue. Some people want to lead a contented life, but they are unable to do so. There may be many reasons for it. For example, if a man has vices like drinking, smoking, opium or any other drug- taking, he cannot lead a contented life. It is because he needs constant flow of money to him for his daily uncurtailable needs. If he has no money to pursue his hobbies, he feels restless. He may have to resort to some unfair and undesirable means to get money somehow.
So, in order to lead a contented life, it is of paramount importance that we should be free from all kinds of vices. Otherwise, our dream of leading a life of contentment will never materialize.
Apart from the vices mentioned above, there are certain other vices and habits like gambling, purchasing lottery tickets, extending lavish parties and spending too much on marriages. Many people consider it a matter of pride to spend a lot of money on the marriages of their sons and daughters, even though they may have to be over head and ears in debt. Is it wise on their part?
Certain people, particularly the young people and still particularly, young ladies, spend too much money on their fashionable dresses and cosmetics. They often buy costly foreign-branded cosmetics, attend beauty parlours frequently and arrange or participate in extravagant kitty parties and thereby make their husbands bankrupts. So high-spending is as much the path to loss of contentment as the pursuit of money. It is quite simple. One who spends too much, needs more and more money to spend and for this money, he has to resort to some unfair means and thus he is bound to lose his contentment.
Therefore, One who spends too much, needs more and more money to spend and for this money, he has to resort to some unfair means and thus he is bound to lose his contentment.It is not a sin to earn money, but it should be earned through honest means and, moreover, we should be satisfied with whatever we earn. We should keep a strict control on our expenditure. We should not hanker after luxuries which we cannot afford to have. We should always remember: "Contentment is a great virtue". That is why the famous English poet, Alexander Pope said long ago, "Happy the man whose wish and care/ A few paternal acres bound".
